Accountability Sessions

Anyone who needs some help with self discipline can join in on virtual accountability work sessions. Here are the rules:

  • Phones off/silent and out of reach

  • Cameras on to enforce accountability

  • Microphones muted except to call out someone for being on their phone!

  • Write your goals for the session in the chat

We extend the Pomodoro Technique by cycling through working for 50 minutes and taking a break for 10 minutes. At the end of the session, we will share our progress and whether we reached our goals. This gives us a chance to catch up and socialize a bit as a reward for our hard work!

Tips from Elena Poliakova (5th yr, IB)

  • Read the book "The Professor is In" by Karen Kelsky and her blog: This helped me a lot to navigate the job market (interviews, negotiation, etc.); I wish I had read her book earlier in my PhD journey

  • Focus on methods: Master at least 1 method that is important for your research because new topics appear and you can become interested in new topics / ideas

  • Go to conferences in your field and other fields, just to listen to new ideas and network. Now, many conferences are online, which is very convenient

  • Present, present, present: take any chance to present and get feedback

  • Be aware of local opportunities: Courses at Emory and Georgia Tech, professional community in Atlanta

  • Look at CVs of scholars you admire / colleagues in their 5th year to see what activities you can participate in to have a strong record
