FEEDBACK from Georgia Tech’s Cutting-Edge Technologies undergraduate students on ME as a guest speaker [2021]
“Sarah Ku was an excellent and engaging guest speaker. Content aside, her passion for insects and sustainability was evident and exciting to hear. I like how she began her talk with business-related background information and closed it by connecting the insect topic to relevant business implications — it made the talk feel very targeted towards her audience.“
“Overall, I think Ms. Ku may be the best speaker that we have had to date. Now, this may be partially due to my own interest in the topic at hand, but I also think there are a number of other reasons for why I am justified in my opinion. To begin, because she is one of the younger experts that we have had the pleasure of interacting with, I think she was able to connect with her audience, who also happen to be younger, on a deeper and more personal level. Even though it was no secret that she was much more experienced and knowledgeable than us, especially in this field, she still talked to us as if we were on the same level. She forwent talking “down” to us, and rather spoke to us as if she were speaking to her friends. Additionally, Ms. Ku’s presentation was easily digestible, while also being one of the most informative. Walking away from her seminar, the audience was able to feel like they were actually able to understand the topics she explained, instead of being confused about what they just heard in the past. And lastly, I think one of the best characteristics about Ms. Ku was when she was able to admit that she didn’t know something. During the Q&A portion of her seminar, Ms. Ku wasn’t afraid to say that she didn’t know an answer to a question. Yet then on top of that, she began a discussion about it, asking the audience for their opinions and responding accordingly. Which, I think, is one of the most beneficial ways to truly engage your audience and keep their attention.“
“I very much enjoyed this speaker's lecture! I appreciated the broader discussion facilitated that went beyond the content of the paper and illustrated a number of similar connections. I feel that this produced a more inspiring lecture that pushed its viewers to think creatively about what impacts could come from this entire area of research. I also very much enjoyed the primer to the speaker’s own business philosophy around creating stakeholder value and embracing a changing business environment that is slowly repositioning around sustainability. This is something that excites me in my own career and thus allowed me to establish an additional connection to the content at hand.“
“I really loved Sarah Ku’s talk about the utilization of bugs for sustainable waste management and production of renewable energy. Not only did she present interesting and relevant information, but she was an engaging and relatable speaker with whom I enjoyed interacting. I appreciated how she challenged the negative cultural perception around eating, keeping, and using bugs, and I believe that talks like hers are an important way to break down the stigma and encourage widespread acceptance of these scientific discoveries.“
“I found this talk super interesting. I thought I was not going to like it, and that I would be disgusted the whole time. However, Sarah’s passion, enthusiasm, and knowledge about this talk made the talk and topic very enjoyable and interesting. It really got me thinking about the practicality of this adjustment and shift to use bugs for sustainable purposes.“
“Sarah Ku has been my favorite speaker of the semester so far. I truly enjoyed the topic; it was refreshing to learn about such a unique topic, especially about insects that have such counterintuitive roles in the green economy. The length of her presentation was great, as there was plenty of time for the class to have a fleshed-out discussion and ask more specific questions. She also had a great sense of humor, describing crickets as the ‘gateway insect’.”
